How much does a ceramic coating cost?
At Get Detailed MI in Wayne, ceramic coating is priced by vehicle size. A 3 year coating is $750 for a coupe, $825 for a sedan, $900 for a midsize SUV, $1,000 for a 4 door truck, $1,000 for a large SUV and $1,150 for an XL SUV. A 1 year coating runs from $500 for a coupe to $750 for an XL SUV, and a 5 year from $900 for a coupe to $1,375 for an XL SUV. If your paint needs correction first, that is priced separately or as a bundle. We give you the exact number after seeing the car, and it does not change after you say yes. Read the full price guide.
Is a ceramic coating worth it with Michigan road salt?
Yes, a ceramic coating is worth it with Michigan road salt, and salt is the reason most of our customers get one. Salt does not eat modern clear coat overnight, but the winter cycle does the damage: salt film bonds to the paint, and the frequent washing it forces adds marring of its own. A coating gives that film a slick surface to release from, so winter washes take less scrubbing. It does not replace washing. It makes washing work. Read the full guide.
What is the difference between a ceramic coating and wax or a sealant?
Durability, and what they physically are. Wax sits on top of the paint and lasts weeks to a few months. A sealant is synthetic and holds up longer. A ceramic coating cures into a hard layer measured in years, which is why it needs corrected paint underneath and a controlled cure to go on properly. Every correction package includes a sealant; a coating is the step up from one.
Will a ceramic coating prevent rock chips and scratches?
No, a ceramic coating does not prevent rock chips, and we would rather lose the sale than let you believe otherwise. A coating is measured in microns. It adds real chemical and UV resistance, not impact resistance. It resists light wash marring; it will not stop a stone off the highway. If rock chips are your actual concern, paint protection film is the product that addresses that, and we will tell you so rather than sell you the wrong thing.
Should I choose the 1, 3 or 5 year coating?
Match it to how long you plan to keep the car and how it lives. Most of our customers choose the 1 or the 3 year, because most owners keep a car for about three years or less. A lease or a car you will sell soon is well served by 1 year. If you are keeping the car long-term, 5 years means fewer re-coats and the most durable protection. Whichever you pick, the coating only looks as good as the paint under it, which is what correction is for.
Is the 1, 3 or 5 year a warranty?
No. The 1, 3 or 5 year is how long that coating is expected to last with proper care, not a warranty. How long it actually lasts depends on how the car is washed, stored and driven: a coating that goes through brush car washes or sits outside through every Michigan winter will wear sooner. We walk you through the aftercare at pickup so you get the most out of it.
Can you coat a leased car?
Yes, and the 1 year tier usually suits a lease better than a 5 year one. What a coating protects against over a lease term is the wash marring and etching that accumulate while the car is yours. Tell us how long you have left and we will say which tier stops making financial sense, rather than sell you protection that outlives your time with the vehicle.
How long do you need my vehicle?
A coated vehicle stays at our Wayne shop until the coating has cured, and every coating needs a full 24 hours minimum, glass, leather and wheel coatings included. Rushing cure time is the fastest way to shorten a coating’s life, so we do not do it. We will give you an exact window when we quote.
Can you coat a brand-new car from the dealer?
Yes, and it is a good time to do it, but new does not mean flawless. Dealer prep and transport put light swirls into most new vehicles before you ever see them. We still inspect and correct as needed. The correction is usually lighter on a new car, which is reflected in your quote.
How should I wash it afterwards?
Two-bucket hand wash, pH-neutral soap, clean microfiber mitt, dedicated drying towel. No brush automatics, no dish soap. We go through this with you at pickup. A 3 year coating run through a brush wash weekly will not last 3 years.
How long before I can wash a newly coated car?
Wait a full week before washing it at all. The coating stays at our shop for its full 24-hour cure after it goes on, which is the part of the cure that has to happen under controlled conditions, and it keeps hardening after you drive away. Washing inside that first week is the most common way an owner shortens a coating they just paid for. After the week is up, the two-bucket routine above is what keeps it performing.
Do you check a coating after it has been on a while?
Yes, and the in-shop check-up is free. Bring the car in and we will look at how the coating is actually performing rather than guess from its age. The quick version you can do yourself: after a wash, watch how water leaves the paint. If it still beads up and sheets off, the coating is doing its job. If water sits flat on the panel, it is worth having us look at it.
Do you polish and coat RVs?
Yes. RV polish and coating is done at our Wayne shop rather than on site, worked on outdoors, and it is usually a multi-day job rather than a single visit. RV work is quoted individually, so there is no starting price on this page. Call or text us with the vehicle and what you want done and we will give you a number.
Do you offer graphene coatings, and are they better than ceramic?
Yes, we offer graphene coatings. A graphene coating is a variant of a ceramic coating rather than a different category of product: the chemistry is adjusted, and owners often report a slicker feel and less water spotting. What decides how long any coating lasts is still the prep underneath it and how the car is washed afterwards, not the label on the bottle. Tell us how the car lives and we will say whether graphene is worth it for you or whether it makes no practical difference.
What are the downsides of a ceramic coating?
The honest downsides are cost, time and what it cannot do. A coating costs more up front than wax or a sealant, from $500 for a coupe. The car stays with us for the full 24-hour cure. The paint usually needs correction first, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it. It does not stop rock chips, and it still needs washing. For a car that lives in a garage, a good sealant may be enough.
Can I take a ceramic coated car through a car wash?
Avoid brush car washes. The brushes put swirls into the paint, and a coating run through one every week will not reach its expected life. A two-bucket hand wash with pH-neutral soap is what keeps a coating working. We go through the method with you at pickup.
Can I wax a ceramic coated car?
You do not need to. The coating is the protective layer, and wax on top would sit on the coating and wear away within weeks to a few months. It adds work without adding protection. Keeping the coating clean with the right hand wash is what keeps it performing.
Can I apply a ceramic coating myself?
You can, and consumer coating kits exist. The hard parts are the prep and the cure. Any swirls left in the paint are sealed in under the coating. Patches that cure unevenly have to be polished off. That is why we correct the paint first and let every coating cure in a controlled bay.
How often should I ceramic coat my car?
When the expected life of the coating you chose runs out: about once a year for the 1 year coating, and every three or five years for the others. How the car is washed and stored moves that. The years are expected life with proper care, not a warranty.
Why will you not quote me over the phone?
The number depends on the package and on how much correction your paint needs before it is coated, and that is something we have to see. We would rather ask for your year, make, model and a few daylight photos, texted to (313) 643-5463, and give you a number that does not change, than quote low and revise it once your car is here.
